Don’t Forget These 3 Easily Forgotten Places to Clean in Your Apartment

SHARING IS CARING:

Out of sight is out of mind, and nowhere is that more true than when it comes to apartment cleaning. But that doesn’t mean that the dirt, dust, grime, and odors aren’t there. Make your home fresher by giving just a little attention to these three spots:

Your dusty drapery & upholstery:

We can easily see dust on smooth surfaces, and take care of it just as easily. But fabrics grab and cling to particles of every kind, and they do it without showing. Keep in mind that you’re putting exactly the same head on the sofa pillow that you do on your bed pillow, except the sofa pillow probably isn’t getting washed as often as your sheets. Invite your vacuum’s upholstery tool to become part your regular apartment cleaning routine. Vacuum your sofa and upholstered chairs when you vacuum the carpet, as well as the curtains and blinds. If any of those are actually washable (slipcovers, removable pillow covers, duvet covers, curtains), throw them in the laundry on a regular basis.

Your funky dishwasher filter:

Yes, your dishwasher has a filter. Is that news to you? If so, it’s probably long past due for a cleaning, and it’s letting you know with that smell you thought was just dirty dishes. You’ll find it wherever your dishwasher drains, and you’ll probably also see an arrow or diagram indicating the way to remove it. Get it as clean as you can with a dish brush, then replace it and run the dishwasher through a cycle or two with machine cleaner. (You’ll find machine cleaner at home improvement stores, in the appliance section.) How often you need to do it depends on how you use your dishwasher, but it’s a quick apartment cleaning chore you can do whenever you notice the need.

Your unclean washing machine:

Mold and mildew thrive in damp, dark, closed environments, which is exactly what your washing machine gives them, and an ordinary wash cycle won’t wash them away. If your clothes aren’t as meadow-fresh as you’re used to, it may be time for a cleaning. One benefit of living in an apartment with your own laundry is that you can know your washing machine is always clean. And with these instructions from DIY Network you’ll see how easy it is to keep it that way.

You don’t need to overhaul your apartment cleaning routine, but if you just remember to have an eye on these three spots you’ll be giving yourself a cleaner, more comfortable home.
